Each time a decision is made, there are many factors we take into account regarding the safety and well-being of our entire school community. The decisions are made to make them in a timely fashion in order for families to make the necessary accommodations.
PLEASE HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE FOR DELAYS, CLOSINGS AND EARLY RELEASES.
The following are general guidelines that are followed when determining a delay, early release or closure:
For snow, ice or other weather-related delays. we monitor current and forecasted conditions. In addition to weather conditions, we take into account the ability of the county and local towns to plow and make roads passable. We also need to assure that our buses are ready and parking lots and sidewalks are cleared. The district communicates with neighboring districts, officials and meteorologists in order to make the most appropriate decision.
Schools may also be delayed, closed or have an early release if there is a forecasted sustained wind chill near -30 degrees Fahrenheit or colder or when the actual wind chill is a sustained -15 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. The district uses forecasts provided by the National Weather Service.
If school is delayed or closed, we make every effort to provide notification by 6 a.m. the day of the closing. In extreme weather conditions, we may make a determination the prior evening. When school is closed due to inclement weather, all extracurricular programs and school meetings are cancelled (with the possible exception of a board of education meeting). For an early release, we contact families as soon as possible.
ONE & TWO HOUR DELAYS - Bus pick up and school start times will occur one or two hours later than the normal times. Breakfast will be served on days where there is a one and two hour delay.
NEW IN 2017-18: THREE HOUR DELAY - Districts in our region, including the Whitney Point CSD, have added a new option of a 3-hour delay. This option will generally not be used as a first choice but may be used if there is a good chance that road and weather conditions will improve within a three-hour period of the start of school. In the event a three-hour delay occurs, bus pick up and scholl start times will occur three hours later than the normal times. No breakfast will be served if there is a three-hour delay.
